In the last post, I mention that I was going to come up with 3 approaches on how I could show a creative block in a creative and abstract way.

The approaches or techniques I wanted to include in my project were:

  • Paint, Pen strokes and form of mixed media that could visually represent art in an implicit way. For example, close-ups of paint textures made by brush strokes.

  • Projects on a person or on a 3D model with a voiceover about the emotions an artist goes through whilst experiencing a creative block. I liked this idea because not only will the projection be of an abstract piece, the final video could she abstract in the sense that the user would not initially know what part of the body I am showing due to the close-ups of the camera and the animation taking place on the body. This approach will be interesting because I will abe about to experiment with textures, shadows and colours on a body/skin tone.
  • Finally, I had the idea of a blooming rose turning black for light to then come and give it life again. I felt that this was almost a literal representation of my idea, with is good because from this idea I could possibly expand and improve

Overall these 3 approaches/techniques were somewhat related. I was really interested in the 2nd idea, the projections onto a 3D model/person. I think this method to my idea will help develop my skills and creativity.

My idea so far

To create a 3D animation showing an abstract video being projected onto a 3D model. For the abstract aspect of the project, I intend to include paint and/or floral textures as my mixed media to help illustrate the story of the emotions felt by an artist. The final video will be accompanied by a voiceover. This voiceover may be a poem, spoken word or even just a passage that evolves around the concept of overcoming.

WildBYTES (2015) Kat von D – live face projection mapping. Available at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71L5uHcYZLo (Accessed: 23 February 2017).

Both these videos made me think about how the animation and the body have to be one in order for it to look realistic. Not only do the colours have to be vibrant on the model’s skin, I have to think about what types of shape I intend to use and how to position them on the body. I need to think about the transition from one animation to the next and how the animation is going to interact with the body. For example, the model a butterfly could land on the models arm and then turn into a flower once the model moves her hand. Planning and timing are going to be prevalent in this project.

In both videos I like how they experimented with light and dark, both videos used that to their advantage to make the projection stand out more and give shape to the animation through the natural contours of the face.

Alexa Meade paints people turning them into live paintings. I liked her work because she uses different paint strokes to create different textures in order to get the right amount of depth in her artworks. The concept behind her work and mine are connected, both our ideas need the medium to be one with the body we are using.

In a TED talk she gave in she talked about how she experimented on food before she started to paint on people. I need to explore what type of paint strokes and pen marks will look best on the model’s skin.

Step Up Revolution (2012) Directed by Scott Speer [Film]. Lions Gate Entertainment.

This scene if from a movie called Step Up Releloutioln. The dancers were disguised themselves as paintings and then they began to dance. What interested me about this scene is how the shapes on the dancer’s body were somewhat distorted when the model moved. I want my projection to interactive with the body but I also what my model to do more than stand or walk, maybe I could have the model dance while the animation is on her body.

TO DO

  1. Create mood boards for ways to show emotions through colours, shapes, lines, sounds etc
  2. Artist research – artists who suffered from creative blocks (past and present) and artists who use similar processes and techniques I intend to use for this project
  3. Storyboard
  4. Draft or Prototype for class next week
