Originally I wanted the model to dance in a rectangular room which was going to be dark and lonely but since seeing Lauryn dance and now knowing the movement the model is going to have, I redesigned the environment of the animation.

The environment is going to be a model I make in Maya. This model will be made up of various shapes that will mould into one. The animation will start in a white room, where the model will be happy, the camera pans around the dark path full of statues(negative thoughts) appear. The model walks down the lonely path to the end which is a circle, the model then begins to dance.

The white room, where the animation begins will have an abstract pattern made out of shapes and objects representing happy emotions.

INSPIRATION

Romanowski, A. (2016). Adobe After Effects CC 2017 splash screen artwork. [Digital Artwork].

I saw this art pieces and thought that it would be cool to incorporate something like this into the animation. I like the idea of a glowing object in the dark and this pattern uses that very well. Because the artist used a repetitive pattern the glowing aspects of the artwork do not make it overpowering but gives it a special look and feel. By incorporating a colourful and detailed pattern/background to the happy environment side, the viewer will be able to see the contrast between the happy and sad emotions.

My aim for the animation is for the viewer to understand what is happening, through the changes in the environment and on the model’s body. The environment is going to be the most prominent thing and plays an important role in the animation so it has to be done just as well as the patterns on the model’s body.

BEGINNING OF MAKING THE ENVIROMENT

Created a box and applied a surface shader material to it, making it a light source for the happy environment and the beginning of the dark path. For the path I was aiming for was similar to the on in a movie called, “The Incredibles” (2004). A path that is high above the ground and gives the room a spacious yet dangerous feel to it.

I modelled the statues into aggressive poses to represent and emphasis on negativity. I researched aggressive poses and saw how the models were shapes and tried to replicate this in my own models.

Some of the poses I referred to when shaping my statues.

For the entrance to the path I created a jagged doorway, this gave the environment a mystery and scary feel to it which is what I wanted. The lighting plays a huge part into this, by using minimal lighting I was able to create lots of shadows the emphasis on this scary atmosphere.

I intentionally used models that were faceless because I wanted to reparesent that negative thoughts and emotions do not have faces but they do hinder us like how someone blocking your way.

TO DO

  1. In the animation, I have some wide shots so I will add some structure of the path making it look more realistic and not like it is floating in the air.
  2. make patterns and photograph and scan
  3. create video
  4. make the happy pattern and add to environment
