I wanted to make the animated patterns myself, through the use of different coloured paints and textures. I made this experiment below, using an image of a paint texture, I got from Google.

The thickness of the paint gave the depth and texture to the model’s body which is exactly what I am looking for. For experimental purposes, I added a bright pink background behind the model to see how the texture would look against it and the model’s body stands out perfectly.

RESEARCH

To get very defined and thick paint textures I have to use the paint texture called Impasto, which is using large amounts of thick acrylic paint with brush strokes or high knife marks to create artworks. This painting texture gives the artworks a 3D appearance. Famous artists like Vincent Van Gogh, Hans Hofmann and Willem de Kooning used this technique when creating their abstract expressionist artworks. The type of pattern I aiming to make is similar to that genre.

I saw this on Instagram and it gave me the idea to use paint to make the animated pattern. I think it will be interesting to see how I translate this idea into an animated video because I have to take into consideration camera focal length the photographing my paint patterns. Too much depth of field could make the pattern not work and not enough would to give my desired amount of depth. To digitize the pattern I will photograph and scan the paintings.

These video ad images gave me ideas on colour combination I could use when making my patterns. I know that 2 valuable colours to buy are black and white because I can instantly change the mood of the paintings by using those colours.

PAINTS AND STUFF

On 4th April I bought an acrylic paint set, plastic paint knives and paint boards for a total pf £22, which wasn’t bad. This paint set was the best because it had both black and white paints (which is what I wanted) along with other vibrant colours, giving me more room to experiment with colour combinations.

Although I couldn’t find thick acrylic paint, I feel what I bought will work out just fine.
