I looked back on my idea and I realised that it was boring. I wasn’t pushing myself creatively. So here are the changes I’ve made.

  • Presenting more data rather than one month’s worth. I intend to get a year or two worth of data as this will show the change over time a little bit more, since the timeline is longer.
  • Creating a 3D rendered environment to present the data, rather than a 2D pie chart.

Now I need to figure out how best to present the data, e.g. using a bar graph and how to make a 3D environment.

Data Breakdown

Music chart is made up of:

  • Song position
  • Song position last week
  • How many weeks the song has been on the charts
  • and the song’s peak position

Originally I thought the best way to display a song’s current position was in the form of a bar graph, but then that would look the same throughout the piece and that could get boring. Also, using a bar graph was very limiting, creatively.

Therefore, I will show the songs’ current position using bubbles. The largest bubble will represent the current number 1 song. Also, the order of the bubble will never be the same for each visual data.

The best way to present what the song’s position was the previous week, will be in the form of a table. This is because a bar chart or a pie chart could confuse the audience, because the chart number won’t be in chronological order.

Weeks on the chart – a ring chart will show this. I will emphasise the duration of the song through the length of the line.

3D Breakdown

I’ve watched some tutorials and video on youtube showing how to make Data Visualization in VR. A majority of them use Unity with D3.js and/or three.js.

Research and How-to

The videos above, made me think about how I want to layout the information so it is easier for the user to understand as well as move around also. This also gave me ideas on what I could add to the interactivity aspect of my project. Such as the user using a cursor to click on the bubble that represents a song and it will play.

From this video, I learned that I have to keep information density low so not a lot of writing because it is difficult to read in VR. So if I want to include facts about the artist, song etc I will have to keep that a minimum. Additionally, my main  goal is to make my piece to be more about the visual rather than the text.
