INTRODUCTION
Forgotten Days is a single-player, post-apocalyptic/futuristic adventure game with a first-person perspective. This 3D game follows 18 years old Luna, on her mission to save her father and restore the SkyLark Kingdom.
From the language of the people to the UI of the game, Forgotten Days fully immerses the player into Luna’s world. Throughout the game, the player will be right by Luna’s side giving them a sense of loyalty and increasing their feeling of duty within the missions. The bond between the player and Luna will grow stronger, as they travel and fight alongside each other, the player will truly feel as if they are Luna’s friend.
The player will venture through numerous action-packed challenges whilst travelling through the galaxy.
With hidden clues to find, puzzles to solve and Lydon guards to defeat, there is never a dull moment on this adventure.
The game will obtain a bright and colourful themed space environment inspired by Pop Art and Fauvism.
SUMMARY
Set in the year 3050, humans are now living in space. Heir to the SkyLark Kingdom and daughter of King Sorrel, Luna finds out that the man who she thought to be her loving father was in fact Arok, an evil clone from their rival Kingdom, Lydon.
Her real father and rightful ruler of SkyLark was abducted, 5 years ago, and was held captive by the evil ruler of Lydon, King Nala-Ta.
Luna discovered these truths when she found her father (Arok) watching a hologram in his office. It showed him and King Nala-Ta attacking and kidnapping her real father. Confused, shocked and angry by what Luna had now discovered, she challenged Arok for the position of Ruler. After winning the battle, Arok was sentenced to death by floating and Luna gained temporary leadership of the SkyLark Kingdom.
Before Arok’s death he had implemented strict rules that made SkyLark the hardest place to live throughout the whole galaxy. For Example, residents were rapidly dying because he was selling oxygen at an exceedingly high price for no need. The Kingdom was suffering without their rightful ruler, King Sorrel.
Now Luna must embark on a mission across the galaxy and straight into enemy territory to save her father in order to restore SkyLark Kingdom.
FEEDBACK
Class feedback was good, although I was asked why the player isn’t Luna and this is because the player is her childhood friend who also acts as her bodyguard. The main theme of Forgotten Days is the relationships, between father & daughter. having the player not be Luna somewhat takes this away, therefore I’ve decided to make the character nameless and genderless. Meaning since the game is first-person, the player isn’t going to see their character even if they design one.
The narrative of the story will be told in the second person, referring to the player as “you”
Another thing I was struggling with was the perspective of the game. I wanted it to be a first person but there were sections of the game that I thought would have looked better in the third person. I didn’t know any games that were similar to my idea and that could help with this issue, I was suggested No Mans Sky and that was extremely helpful!
Not only does this game help address the perspective issue I was having but also the colour scheme. I wanted a colourful environment but not too colourful for the viewer.
Murray, S. (2016). No Man’s Sky. [Video Game].
No-Mans sky uses bright colours but uses gradients to diffuse the vibrancy of the colours, this is a good technique because it helps the player play the game for longer without hurting their eyes. It also gives the game a specific aesthetic that is recognisable to the players. This si what I want for my game, to use the technique of gradients and for my game to have a trademark look. For this trademark look, I could have some like a low-poly environment with a gradient colour scheme of colours inspired by galaxies. Such as purple, blue, green, pink etc. I intended to grate a mood board of colour scheme ideas.
The low poly idea ties well with my idea to draw inspiration from pop art, although the original idea was to use colours inspired by pop art. The use of minimal detail and simple shapes still relate well to my low poly idea.
McRae, B. (2016). Osiris: New Dawn. [Video Game].
Osiris: New Dawn is a first person survival game, similar to No Mans Sky. What I liked about this game is the user interface. All the information the player needs is laid out neatly around the perimeters of the player’s screen. This helps the player focus on the game and makes it easier for the to access their assets quickly and efficiently during the game. I also liked how the UI was translucent, ensuring that nothing was obstructing the player’s view.
FURTHER IDEAS
Right now the game is a single player. I want to make it both a single and multiplayer but I’m not sure how. Maybe the multiplayer aspect of the game could be a leaderboard? Other players would see what chapter (level) each other are at and ask for help. I want my game to build a community within itself, I’m just not sure how to do that, as of yet.
TO DO
- Research colour schemes and make mood board
- Research low-poly games and designs – make sketches
- Research how to make first person game in unity
- Research different types of multiplayer games
