The brief is to create a roller coaster cart suitable for a sci-fi film, animation, TV program or game. The carts must be able to fit two passengers and be related to a theme. With ‘clean’ geometry, Uv mapped and textured made in Maya.

Initial Ideas

Ideas I had for themes were:

  • Countries of the world – each cart will be inspired by a countries flag, culture or traditions
  • A political statement – Carts showing the previous presidents then trump as the last cart followed by and empty cart representing the damage he has done to America.
  • Nigerian folk tales – showing the main characters from famous folk stories
  • Recent events (sports) – the Superbowl 51, show the carts’ inspired by the winning team.

After looking at these ideas I wasn’t feeling very confident in them and I felt that they didn’t agree with the brief.

The carts had to be suitable for a game. I started to think about video games.

 

 Research (Video Games) and Idea

When I think about video games I immediately think about video games because that was what I place a lot as a child. I also thought of vintage games such as Pac-man etc. This lead me to think of a movie called Wreck-it-Ralph where a character from a game moves to another, in search of a medal for heroes. One of the games in this movie was called Sugar Rush Kingdom. This inspired the theme for my carts’ which is ice cream and desserts. All things sweet!

The image below shows a few designs of how I might want the cart to look like. Right now I intend the desserts to be at the head of the cart this is so the viewer will immediately get the theme of the rollercoaster.

Aesthetic

The look/style I want my carts’ to have is very cartoony and fun. I want to experiment with smooth shapes and curves making the carts resemble that hat of a smooth cupcake or ice cream. The images below show examples of my inspiration so far.

These are a few shots from the movie. I like how the theme of sugar is carried throughout the game and is visible in every element. Such as the terrain in the scenery and how the characters wheels are sweets yet they have so much detail and texture. In the movies the go-karts were also inspired by desserts, I intend to do more research onto this and come up with more sketches and designs.

 

In terms of colour scheme, Sugar Rush used a lot of pink just in various shades, this is good and helps keep the theme of the game united but I would like to experiment with different colours, Therefore this game called “Candy Crush Saga” also evolves around the theme os sweets but they used different colours rather than just pink. I intend to use this approach in when making my carts’.
